ITLOS: internships for university students in Hamburg

New training opportunities abroad for university students with ITLOS internships, International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea offers internships at its headquarters in Hamburg, Germany.

The deadline for submitting the application for the next internships starting is June 30, 2022. Here are all the details.

ITLOS INTERNSHIPS FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

The Internship Program organized by ITLOS is an interesting opportunity for university students who want to acquire and deepen skills on the work and functions of the court and to allow the court itself and its members to benefit from the assistance of people with knowledge and capabilities in different sectors.

Students will have the opportunity to work in the following departments:

Legal office;
Library;
Language services;
Press office.
Internships are unpaid but are considered an added value to one’s curriculum and an opportunity for great professional growth.

RECIPIENTS

ITLOS internships are aimed at university students who meet the following requirements:

be under the age of 35;
have completed at least the three-year degree course;
be enrolled in a master’s degree course or post-graduate study course;
excellent knowledge of English and / or French;
interest in international law in particular, international law of the sea, international affairs or interest in international institutions and organizations.
Interested parties must be enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate study course in one of the following faculties:

Jurisprudence, International Law, Law of the Sea;
International Relations, Journalism, Communication Sciences;
Interpreting;
Archival and library sciences.

PERIOD AND DURATION OF INTERNSHIPS

Internships for Itlos university students last 3 months and are usually activated four times a year: from January to March, from April to June, from July to September and from October to December.

In detail, the internships are activated in the following periods:

from January to March: application to be submitted by 30 September of the previous year;
from April to June: application to be submitted by 31 December of the previous year;
from July to September: application to be submitted by 31 March;
from October to December: application to be submitted by 30 June.

CERTIFICATE

At the end of the internship period, candidates will be issued with a certificate stating the duties performed and the skills acquired.

ITLOS

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) is an independent body of the United Nations, based in Hamburg, created with the IIIrd International Convention on the Law of the Sea which was held in Montego Bay, in Jamaica, December 10, 1982.

ITLOS is called upon to manage disputes between 168 member nations regarding the safety requirements of ships, fishing rights in international waters, the division of national territorial waters and the prohibitions on fishing for marine species protected by international conventions.

HOW TO APPLY

Those interested in ITLOS internships can apply by filling out the appropriate online form available on this page dedicated to internships.

The following must also be attached to the application form:

presentation letter explaining the reasons why the candidate is interested in participating in the ITLOS internships;
curriculum vitae;
short research project (in English or French) of no more than 10 pages, possibly on a topic of relevance to the work of the Court;
copy of a document certifying enrollment in a university course, university qualifications / diplomas and the list of courses attended or transcript of the grade;
references;
certified languages.
It is possible to send applications for internships to be held in the period from October to December 2022 by 30 June 2022.
